Makita’s 40V max XGT 1-inch square drive impact wrench, model GWT09, is rated at 2,950 ft.lbs. of nut-busting torque and was introduced at the start of September 2026, according to Makita and SlashGear. Makita’s product page shows no price, and nothing in the sources confirms Canadian availability.
What are the torque and speed numbers?
Makita lists 2,950 ft.lbs. (4,000 N•m) of nut-busting torque and 2,320 ft.lbs. (3,150 N•m) of fastening torque. A four-speed switch sets no-load speed at 0 to 600, 0 to 700, 0 to 850 or 0 to 1,200 RPM, with impacts per minute of 0 to 1,200, 0 to 1,300, 0 to 1,500 or 0 to 1,750. Those are Makita’s own ratings, and the sources give no independent test results yet.
What is different about this wrench?
The GWT09 has a short anvil, which Makita says helps in tight spots. Overall length is 17-1/8” and net weight with the battery is 24.6 lbs. Three forward and three reverse Auto-Stop modes are listed, along with a rotating toolless D-handle, a tethering ring, an LED light ring that lights the work area from 360 degrees, and XPT dust and water resistance. A rubber battery joint is there for anti-vibration protection, and a full-speed mode reduces how far the trigger must be pulled. Makita also lists digital communication that watches for overload, over-discharge and overheating.
What comes in the box?
Two versions are listed. GWT09Z is the tool only. GWT09T is the kit, with two 40V max XGT 5.0Ah batteries (BL4050F), a DC40RA Rapid Optimum Charger and a bag. Makita backs the tool with a 3-year limited warranty.
How much does it cost, and is it sold in Canada?
Makita’s product page gives no price and sends buyers to a dealer locator. The SlashGear report, republished by Yahoo, also gives no price. The product page is from Makita USA, so treat the kit as a United States listing until Makita Canada shows it. Check a Canadian dealer before ordering.
Who it suits
- Heavy equipment and truck fleet shops: the short anvil and the 24.6 lbs weight matter when you reach into wheel ends and frames. Confirm that your sockets and extensions are rated for 1-inch drive.
- Industrial maintenance crews: the four speeds let you choose between speed and control, but check the socket range you need against the torque ratings.
- Steel erectors and bridge crews: the tethering ring suits work at height, though you should confirm your site’s own tool tethering rules.
- Owners of other XGT tools: the same 40V max batteries fit, so the tool-only GWT09Z may be the cheaper way in.
- Occasional users: a wrench in this class is a major purchase, so renting or asking a dealer for pricing first is sensible.
