Milwaukee’s PACKOUT Wire Pulling XL Crate (48-22-8043) holds and feeds up to six 500 ft spools of 12-gauge THHN wire, carries a 75 lb weight capacity and is listed at $160.00 CAD by one Canadian retailer. Milwaukee’s own page shows no price, so the money figures below come from retailer listings and are labelled that way.

What does the wire pulling crate hold?

Milwaukee says the crate stores and pulls up to 6 spools of 500ft 12-gauge THHN wire. Conduit and wire are not included.

The set has two parts, according to Milwaukee’s product page: a standard PACKOUT XL Crate (48-22-8439) and a Wire Pulling Insert (48-22-8044). SlashGear’s PACKOUT preview describes the insert as a part that converts a standard XL Crate, which is worth knowing if you already own one.

Milwaukee lists a wide front opening so wire stays reachable when crates are stacked, front wire retention slots that keep the wires separated, an impact-resistant body, stack or hang options, tool box attachment compatibility and a Limited Lifetime Warranty.

What are the size and weight?

The two retailers that publish dimensions agree with each other. Milwaukee’s page shows a dimension diagram only as an image.

Source Size Crate weight Other
Linen Plus (Canada) 15-3/4 x 18-5/8 x 15 in 9.85 lbs 75 lbs capacity
Toolnut (US) 15.75 x 18.625 x 15 in 9.85 lb 4,400 cu in holding capacity, polypropylene

How much does it cost in Canada and the US?

Linen Plus lists $160.00 CAD. The page says “In Stock” but also that the item ships within 2 to 4 weeks as a special order, so ask before you plan a job start around it.

Toolnut, a US retailer, lists $119.97 with no sale shown. These are retailer prices at the time of writing and can change at any time. Milwaukee links to its Where To Buy page, and none of the sources explain the gap between the two retailers, so do not read the two figures as a like for like comparison.

Who it suits

  • Licensed electricians: the crate is built around 500 ft spools of 12-gauge THHN, so check that your usual runs use that wire. Toolnut describes it for electricians, low-voltage installers and contractors.
  • Apprentices and first time buyers: the retention slots keep wires separated, but conduit and wire cost extra, so budget for the full setup.
  • Serious DIYers: six spool positions may be more than a basement rewire needs. Compare it with a single spool setup before paying $160.00 CAD.
  • Crews already on PACKOUT: it stacks, hangs and accepts tool box attachments, and owners of an XL Crate may only need the insert. The sources do not give the insert’s price.
  • Fleet buyers: the Limited Lifetime Warranty helps, but the 2 to 4 week special order note matters if a whole crew needs one.

Check the spool weight against the 75 lb capacity before loading, since the sources do not give a loaded weight.
